Heathcote’s bush-edge properties can include rock shelves and steep access. Do not pursue a snake toward the national park or beneath a structure.

When calling from Heathcote, explain whether the animal is indoors or outside, whether it remains visible, and whether children, pets, customers, livestock or workers are nearby. Harley can then assess the immediate risk and the safest access.

Bushland corridors and sloping gardens make distance especially important; never follow a snake through a rear boundary or reserve.

• national park edges: If the snake travels toward national park edges, note which side it entered and leave the area undisturbed.
• rocky gardens: Do not place hands, tools or cameras into gaps around rocky gardens; report only what you can see safely.
• bush tracks: Tell Harley whether bush tracks is open, enclosed, elevated or difficult to access from the street.
• family homes: Use family homes as a landmark when explaining the last known position; do not move closer to inspect it.
• decks: Identify the safest gate, path or building entrance leading toward decks without approaching the animal.
• rail-side vegetation: Keep people and pets away from rail-side vegetation until the sighting has been assessed.

A sighting does not establish that there is a nest or more than one snake. Avoid assumptions about species, numbers or where the animal has gone; preserve the last reliable observation instead.

• Step back slowly and leave a clear route for the animal to move away.
• Close internal doors only when that can be done without moving toward the snake.
• Note its direction of travel rather than following it through vegetation or storage.
• Leave sheds, wall gaps and vegetation undisturbed once the snake disappears.
• If someone may have been bitten, call Triple Zero (000) immediately and follow the operator’s instructions.
