Diamond Python Removed 10 Metres Up a Roseville Tree

A Roseville resident called Snakes in the City after finding a large diamond python high in a tree on her property. Although the snake was away from the house, its prominent position caused concern and the resident wanted it professionally removed.

This was not an ordinary ground-level capture. The python was resting about 10 metres above the garden, so Harley first assessed the tree, the surrounding ground and the safest way to approach without prompting the animal to retreat farther into the canopy.

Working around branches at height increases the difficulty for both handler and animal. The area below needed to remain clear and every movement needed to be deliberate. Harley managed the scene methodically and completed the retrieval without turning a concerned resident's garden into unnecessary drama.

Diamond pythons (Morelia spilota spilota) are non-venomous constrictors with distinctive cream or yellow markings on a dark body. The Australian Museum records them in Sydney bushland and notes that they often go undetected. They are capable climbers and may use trees, roof spaces and other sheltered areas.

Non-venomous does not mean suitable for handling. A frightened python can bite, and trying to grab, prod or dislodge one from a tree creates an obvious fall risk. Keep clear and let an experienced catcher assess the location.

• Keep people and pets out of the area beneath and around the tree.
• Do not shake branches, spray water or throw objects.
• Do not climb a ladder or tree to obtain a closer photo.
• Watch from a safe position and note any movement into nearby cover.
